In celebration of International Women’s Day on Monday 8 March 2021, an online event has been hosted by Southampton City Council to highlight inspirational women in Southampton.

Southampton City Council shared the stories of the speakers on its social media pages and website.

The International Women’s Day theme for 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge. The City Council shared the stories of the guest speakers on what they choose to challenge for women.

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Homes and Culture, said: “This pandemic has shown that the fight for women’s equalities isn’t over, with women being far more disproportionately impacted, both economically and socially.

“This International Women’s Day we want to celebrate local Southampton people who are inspirational to women and have made our city the great place it is.

“This event will be your opportunity to hear the inspiring stories of a few of our incredible Southampton people, who are making a difference in all sectors, from health, sport, media, the arts, and our community.”

The virtual event saw local women from industries such as sport, politics, transgender & non-binary support, journalism, community support, health, and the arts who have contributed to Southampton and empowering women.

Maria Zaccaro, a local democracy reporter for Southampton and Hampshire, The Daily Echo, and BBC spoke on working in a male-dominated field: “To change things you need to be there and address things that are not right.”

Sandy Hopkins, Chief Executive at Southampton City Council closed the event saying: “We are enablers of hope…the key themes of tonight were around being heard, believing in yourself, and making room for your brilliance.”
